I just got my amp back from a local guitar shop. I (they) re-tubed it with the Eurotubes Kit for the DSL 401
I must say that there is a difference but is not that noticeable at low volume. Unfortunately I have to keep a "lease safe gain".

So I would recommend using a matched quad of the JJ EL84's and four of the JJ ECC83S preamp tubes. The high gain ECC83S's have about 10% more gain than standards which adds a bit of bite and a sharper dynamic but does not hurt the clean tone. Now I must say that the clean tone is much nicer than before.
